wild baskets series

This 7 part series meets one Satuday a month for an immersive dive into basket making through the seasons.  Our learning will cover reading the landscape for basketry materials, harvesting, processing and preparing plants into workable material and exploring different techniques of basket making. We will create a collection of wild and beautiful baskets, deepening our connections to ourselves, the earth and each other.

Projects include: bark containers, coiling with grasses, cordage with soft fibers, woven bark baskets, ribbed baskets, twining and diagonal plaiting. Note that depending on the project, not all baskets will be completed within the day and may require you to do some “homework.”

This four day basket making immersion is geared towards teenagers ages 13-16.  We’ll explore 4 very different basket making techniques - woven bark basketry, random weave with vines and diagonal plaiting with cattails and birch, as well as wattle - the art of weaving fences and structures. We’ll also take lots of breaks, play some fun, active games and enjoy all that unfolds as we spend the days together outside weaving baskets and community. Co-taught with the amazing Danielle Prizzi!
